The American Association of Orthodontics recommends children have an orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. Some children require orthodontic treatment at an early age to guide the development of the face and jaws. This early orthodontic treatment is often called Phase 1 Treatment or interceptive orthodontics. Interceptive orthodontics is occasionally necessary to prevent asymmetry of the face due to crossbites, impacted teeth and other developmental issues. These issues can be corrected with braces at an early age whereas left untreated will often require surgery.
